Underwater Cams

Teens4Oceans has installed five underwater camera systems, and are currently replacing three of them with new units. In the Fall of 2011, we brought students and engineers together to design, prototype and build four new systems for deployment in unique, diverse and fascinating large marine ecosystems (LME's). The goal is to install science nodes in nine LME's in the United States’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to give students virtual experiences and remote data collection opportunities, and allow them to realize the importance of our marine ecosystems.

Students involved will gain invaluable hands-on experience with CAD software modeling, marine policy, scientific procedure, electrical engineering, software development, environmental and mechanical engineering, network systems, robotics, intellectual property pursuit, and solar and wind power engineering.  Students involved have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists, engineers and peers to successfully complete each project.

Science nodes present a unique experience for students across the globe by affording free, remote research in a variety of marine ecosystems. With the multitude of data available for students to analyze and correlate, this is a great way to get them involved in scientific processes while providing a valuable inquiry based learning experience.   Students can post their completed research on www.teens4oceans.org for scientific and peer review, giving them public recognition for their achievements.
